Course description
Admission Requirements
According to § 32 of the Maritime Law, to sit for the Master Mariner (Captain of Great Navigation) exam on ships with gross tonnage ≥ 3000 t, a candidate must hold a Senior Officer diploma for such ships and document the required sea‑time (12 months, or 6 months with additional conditions). Only persons who can prove 100 % of the required sea‑time may take the exam.
Professional Entitlements
Holders of the Master Mariner diploma are entitled to the positions: a) watch officer – on any ship, b) senior officer – on any ship, c) captain – on any ship.
Examination Requirements
The exam consists of a theoretical part (multiple‑choice test) and a practical part (simulator/ship). Details:
- Navigation – 15 questions, 45 min (test), no practical part.
- Navigation equipment – 15 questions, 45 min (test).
- Navigation safety – 15 questions, 45 min (test).
- Ship management – 15 questions, 60 min (test), 1 practical task, 20 min.
- Ship safety – 15 questions, 45 min (test).
- Maritime law – 30 questions, 90 min (test).
The oral exam covers English maritime terminology related to ship management and safety, as well as maneuvering in difficult conditions. The written exam requires completing selected ship operational documents in English.

Zgodnie z § 32 ustawy, aby przystąpić do egzaminu, należy posiadać dyplom starszego oficera na statkach o pojemności brutto ≥ 3000 t oraz udokumentowaną praktykę pływania (12 miesięcy lub 6 miesięcy przy spełnieniu dodatkowych warunków). Do egzaminu może przystąpić wyłącznie osoba, która udokumentuje 100 % wymaganego okresu praktyki.
